Civil War Letters of Captain John A. Ritter, M.D.

Civil War Letters of Captain John A. Ritter, M.D.
49th Indiana Volunteers
http://gwillritter.tripod.com/otherdocuments.htm

The following account was written by the grandson of Capt. John A. Ritter, William O. Ritter, sometime in the 1950's....

Excerpts: "It is in the early years of the civil war, that the following history was made. An underground secret organization composed of southern sympathizers, known as the Knights of the Golden Circle, flourished through out Indiana. Dr. William A. Bowles, of French Lick, was the President."

His arrest: "Upon arrival, they quickly dismounted and surrounded Mr. Bowles' home. Captain Ritter gave an alarm at the door which was answered by one of his wives. (It was claimed that he had two wives.)  Captain Ritter explained his mission, Mrs. Bowles protested saying Mr. Bowles was not at home, but on search they found him hidden in a closet, dressed in woman's apparel."

Secrecy: "The Knights of the Golden Circle held their secret meetings in old abandoned buildings, deep thickets, and some times in caves. It is said that the French Lick Lodge kept their records and rituals on a shelf in the hollow of a big sycamore tree, near where the Southern Railroad crosses French Lick Creek."

More secrecy?: "After the arrest of Dr. Bowles and his conviction, the influence of the Knights of the Golden Circle began to wane and soon was disbanded."

Secret Society of Pin Indians Disappear Into History After Civil War

by Velda Brotherton

The Civil War was to have a great impact on everyone who lived in Arkansas, and that included members of the Civilized Cherokee tribe. While Chief Ross forbade his people to take part in border warfare or to organize a band of guerrillas to help protect Arkansas, Elias Boudinot, a resident of Arkansas, encouraged Ross’s nemesis, Stand Watie, to fight for the Confederates. And so was formed a secret society of Cherokee known as Knights of the Golden Circle, finally changed to The Southern Rights party.

Another organization, made up of full bloods who called themselves Keetoowahs began to operate in the Indian Nation on the side of the Union. They were reorganized in 1859 by Evan Jones and his son John, and were claimed to be designed to perpetuate tribal traditions. It was common knowledge in the Nations that they really had been reorganized to fight slavery. This group of Cherokee became known as Pins Indians because of the insignia of crossed pins they wore on their hunting shirts and coats.

Asked to leave the Nations, the Pins reverted to their ancestors way of fighting. Though supposedly aligned with the United States against the Confederate States of America, they consistently raided their arch enemies the Knights of the Golden Circle, using guerrilla warfare at every opportunity.

It was only natural that settlers in the area just across the border in Northwest Arkansas should become unwitting targets of these hit and miss raids by this unruly band of warriors. In fact, according to records, Jones, said to be a white man with his own agenda, trained the Pins in a school in Cincinnati near Cane Hill, Arkansas.

After much political ado, Cherokee Stand Watie was made a General in the Confederate Army. When he and his men attempted to raise the Confederate flag in the Cherokee capital of Tahlequah, about 150 Pins led by Chief Doublehead stopped him.

In the book, The Cherokees, by Grace Steele Woodward, the final mention of the Pins Indians is made when the factions, split by the Civil War reunited in the Indian Nation in 1867.

In the book Mankiller by Chief Wilma Mankiller and Michael Wallis, the Pins are referred to as an ultra secret society. They used secret signs to identify themselves to other members. Touching their hats in salutation would be followed by “Who are you?”, with the proper response being, “I am Keetoowah’s son.” Among the Cherokees it was also known that those who had split from the tribe and fought for the Union forces wore strips of split corn husks in their hair before they went into battle.

Chief Ross never wished to align himself with the Confederate cause and slavery, though many Cherokees did indeed own slaves. So when the Union troops entered Indian Territory in 1862 he welcomed them and left under their protective custody.

Ever a rival of Chief Ross, Stand Watie saw his chance when Ross left the Indian Nations, and declared himself the new principal chief of the Cherokees. Many members of the tribe did not back Watie, and the war within a war spilled into Arkansas to affect those already under constant attack by gangs of bushwhackers.

Pin Indians attacked, burned and killed southern sympathizers on both sides of the border. Those living in Washington County became unwilling victims in this battle between the two factions of Cherokees as well as the two factions of men fighting in the Civil War. Many of the Cherokees caught up in this guerilla warfare fled into neutral lands in Kansas. Hundreds of Indian refugees, being cared for rather poorly in Kansas by the Federal Government, died during the first year of the war.

While down in the Indian Nations and Arkansas, the two factions continued to wage a bitter war. In 1864 Stand Watie was promoted to Brigadier General in the confederacy, the highest rank to be achieved by any Native American. The confederate troops led by General Stand Watie continued to fight long after General Robert E. Lee surrendered his confederate army at Appamattox, Virginia April 9, 1865. It would be late June before Watie’s army finally laid down their arms. In all, 7,000 Cherokees lost their lives in that war. Their homes, libraries, businesses and livestock suffered devastating losses.

White settlers living along the borderland of Northwest Arkansas suffered great losses as well. The white man’s law held no power in the Indian Nation and on the Arkansas side Indians were free from tribal jurisdiction. Outlaw gangs frequenting the area could step across the border from either direction and be free from punishment for their crimes committed on the other side.

According to Conrad Russell, a native of Cane Hill and a historian who wrote many articles about the Civil War from stories he heard at his grandfather’s knee, Jones was white and his name probably wasn’t Jones at all. It was known that he hated slavery in any form and didn’t care how it might be stomped out. He taught the young men to kill, rob and otherwise destroy slave owners. Soon they didn’t much care who they raided. Russell said that soon no man, woman or child was safe from raids by the Pin Indians. The group of outlaw Indians held no loyalties to either side. It was known that they raided both Confederate and Northern sympathizers alike.

Isaac Buchanan, a prosperous farmer living near Cane Hill became a victim of the Pins. One day three of them arrived at his farm and asked for food. Buchanan led them to his cellar where he gave them some apples. When he followed them from the cellar and turned to close the door, they shot and killed him. Buchanan’s three sons had already been cut down by bushwhackers and this deed left his womenfolk defenseless. Finally tiring of the killing, a band of Confederates and local citizens in the beleaguered area gathered weapons and ammunition and set up a series of clever ambushes. Spotting a large band of Pins headed for Cane Hill, they lay in wait south of the settlement along the road they were known to travel.

A group of about 60 Pins rode through and the first contingent closed up any retreat, driving the band into the second and third group who waited in hiding. By the time the renegades made the border, there were few left. It is said they never returned to pull another raid on the citizens around Cane Hill. Thus, according to Arkansas legend, ended the reign of the Pins and they disappeared for good into Indian Territory. Cherokee writings make no more mention of the secret Pins Indians after 1867.

Stories always differ, depending on which side the storyteller is on, but the story of the Pins has been recorded in most Cherokee histories, but few whites. Conrad Russell admits the stories he heard from his grandfather are only hearsay, as is most of our folk lore. However, the written history of the Pins by Cherokee sources are more than hearsay. The mystery of who is entirely correct will probably always remain just that. A mystery.

SCARLET AND THE BEAST

SCARLET AND THE BEAST
By John Daniel
www.scarletandthebeast.com

There are two reasons why the British Masonic conspiracy plunged America into civil war. First, British bankers wanted to establish a permanent central bank under their total control. Second, British Freemasonry wanted to divide powerful America into two weak nations for easy conquest. Information on the latter half of the plan was first published in “The Present Attempt to Dissolve the American Union: A British Aristocratic Plot” (1862), by Samuel Morse (1791-1872), an American artist and inventor, who was also an American counter-intelligence specialist.

Against this British intrusion into American politics, finance, and industry, General Albert Pike initiated the southern rebellion. In 1859 the Southern Jurisdiction of Freemasonry founded the Knights of the Golden Circle as a front to direct the insurrection.

Had it not been for Abraham Lincoln, English Freemasonry would have succeeded. When Lincoln restored the Union, the British Brotherhood, out of revenge, plotted his assassination. The Knights of the Golden Circle, bankrolled by British Masonic interests, selected John Wilkes Booth, a 33rd degree Mason and member of Mazzini´s Young America, for the task.

Freemason Edwin Stanton was assigned to cover up Masonic involvement in the crime. Immediately after Lincoln´s assassination, Stanton ordered military blockades on all roads out of Washington, D.C., except one -- the road Booth was known to have taken for his escape route. Stanton then arranged for a drunk man to be found, similar in build and appearance to Booth. This man was to be murdered and his body burned in a barn adjacent to the only road not guarded by the military. Stanton just happened to be on that road when he "found" the murdered man, certifying that the charred body was the remains of John Wilkes Booth. The real John Wilkes Booth escaped.

After these events, the Knights were soon exposed to the Military Commission that heard evidence on the Lincoln assassination as the secret force behind both the Civil War and the assassination. Original documents relating to the president´s assassination are still locked up in the archives of the Defense Department and are not available to researchers today.

Directly involved in the plot were 33rd degree Freemason and British Prime Minister Henry Palmerston (died in 1865); 33rd degree Freemason John Wilkes Booth; Freemason Judah P. Benjamin, the British Masonic banker´s mouthpiece who gave the order for Lincoln´s assassination; and Jacob Thompson, former Interior Secretary in the Buchanan administration, who withdrew $180.000 from the Bank of Montreal in Canada to set the plot in motion. (Benjamin and Thompson both fled to England to avoid apprehension.) And Freemason Edwin Stanton prepared a cover-up that compares in audacity with the 1963 Warren Commission cover-up of the Kennedy assassination.

The exposure of the Knights was so celebrated following the 1865 conspiracy trials that in the spring of 1867, Albert Pike and a small group of former Confederate generals met in the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. to change the name of the Knights of the Golden Circle to the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The Knight´s new name was taken from the Greek word “Kuklos,” which means "circle."

Under its new name, the Klan attempted to rekindle the Civil War by instigating riots throughout the South. The notorious outlaw Jesse James (1847-1882) was a 33rd degree Freemason and a member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, which had been assigned the task by Albert Pike of robbing Northern banks to fund this new war. It has been estimated that Jesse and the other members of the Knights had buried over $7 billion in gold all over the western states.

Sierra's secret Civil War battle

In response to a story in the Chronicle's Travel section last month about Civil War sites in California, Terry Grillo, a resident of the Sierra town of Volcano (Amador County) sent a letter pointing out the story had "missed the most important site of all."

The story Terry told about a little-known standoff in the tiny Gold Country town is so full of historical drama (and humor), I decided to run it as is, without editing. Here it is:

In 1860, Volcano was a large city by Mother Lode reckoning, with a population of more than 5,000 people. It was posting remarkable civil and cultural advancements for a mining town that began with a few lean-to huts less than ten years before. Volcano enjoyed California's first theater group, first private law school, first astronomical observatory, first debating society, first circulating library.

Volcano was a growing Sierra foothill city, sitting atop millions (now billions) in gold. Armory Hall is at the far left, center. The three-story hotel is the St. George, still in operation.

The city attracted orator Rev. Thomas Starr King, who spoke for the Union at a Volcano rally. Rev. King's speeches were recognized as critical to retaining California. When the local Methodist church burned, he donated a bell to the town in remembrance of support and donations to the National cause.

As the war began, California's new population was closely divided between Federal and Confederate fervor; many recalled fondly the joys and close-held views of their homes far away. The new state - and it's fantastic wealth of gold - could have gone either way.

Volcano was no exception. And despite it's growing society, it was the gold that made it important, and suddenly very important to the warring division in the East. More than $98 million was taken from the little mountain valley - and that was valued at $26 an ounce. At current prices, the gold taken from Volcano would satisfy a good portion of our national debt.

The Knights of the Golden Circle were a large Confederate militia and it became known that they intended to capture a shipment, or several shipments, of gold and take it South for the cause. A small troop of Union militia, the Volcano Blues, were meeting and drilling out of their Armory Hall (today its replacement is the village town hall) and knew they were outmanned. They applied to the Presidio for help. Army bureaucracy hasn't changed much it seems, for they were told troops were not available, but there was an old Mexican War brass cannon - just the tube - out on the docks and they could have it. Probably thought it was a good way to get rid of surplus ordinance.

The 6-pound, smooth-bore cannon was cast by a Boston firm in 1837. The Blues shipped it to Sacramento and then hauled it up to Volcano in a casket, in a hearse, on a dark and quiet night. They built a carriage and caisson in a blacksmith shop that bordered on what is today called Union Square. They knew nothing about artillery, but they were miners and were used to explosives and had plenty of it.

Oral history from my family says that one day soon after the cannon, now named "Old Abe," was mounted, the Knights massed and marched down the city's broad central street, known then and now as Consolation. When they saw the Blues lined up in formation before them, the Rebels cried out to give it up as they were outnumbered. Just then the Union line parted and the Confederates were greeted by the grinning face of a blue-capped miner holding a lighted fuse over the business end of Old Abe. And that was the end of the engagement. The Rebels faded away and the gold was saved for the National cause. Old Abe, and the promise if it's lethal blast, was on regular display throughout the war.

After the engagement, the Blues realized they didn't know how to unload a cannon. They sent to the Presidio for an officer to come up and advise. A young lieutenant was sent - all polish and brass and attitude - and when he looked down the barrel, his face came away ghostly white. "If you had set this off, you damn fools would have killed everyone in the square," he was reported to have remarked. These were rough miners after all and in their trade, the concept of "if one's good, two must be better and why hell, three's the trick," was common.

Thereafter they learned to fire Old Abe without causing a great mess, and when a Union victory was reported, young boys would be sent round to homes of patriots with a message to "put up your windows." The Blues would put a double blank change in the cannon and light if off down Consolation Street. The concussion would blow the glass out of Confederate homes. Window glass was hard to get and was expensive. A pretty nasty trick all around.

The cannon was fired on holidays and community celebrations until the end of World War II. This stopped when the carriage became flimsy and the condition of the brass was suspect. We have an annual Fourth of July parade and car show and this year we're celebrating our Union victory. The carriage and caisson were rebuilt several years ago by a local master craftsman, and Old Abe resides in a shed just off of Union Square. Armory Hall is being renovated under direction of a San Francisco architect. The Starr King Bell hangs in a tower just a few paces east of Old Abe. We gather to ring it on New Year's Eve.

My great-grandmother was 12 years old at the time and the story was passed down to me through her daughter - especially the part about the spit-and-polish lieutenant - and is supported by several reports, including ones at the Bancroft Library and the California Historical Society.

REFLECTIONS ON MWGM, ALBERT PIKE

By History Detective
October 27, 2010

Judah P. Benjahmin was the head of the Knights of the Golden Circle when he and Albert Pike came together to serve under Jefferson Davis and the newly formed Confederate States of America. Pike had already assumed leadership as Grand master of the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite Lodge in Charleston, South Carolina which was the first state to secede from the Union. Benjahmin received notoriety as the highest-ranking Jew in the Cabinet of Jefferson Davis while Pike headed the Confederate Secret Service.

At the end of the "Civil" War, Pike organized the plot to murder President Abraham Lincoln, involving his lodge member, John Wilkes Booth. The Union Army put out an all points bulletin to find Albert Pike and Judah Benjahmin. Mr. Benjahmin escaped by leaving the country through Florida to the Caribbean
then to England. Queen Victoria I hired the former Secretary of War of the Confederate States as her legal consultant. Pike was caught trying to escape into Canada, and arrested. Vice President Andrew Johnson (now the new President) pardoned Pike and invited him to the Whitehouse.

Did I mention that Pike was Johnson's Grand Master? Yes Johnson was a Scottish Rite Mason and elevated from Master Mason to 32 Degree Mason. The man who may have been responsible for the murder of President Lincoln went free and there was no trial.

In the 1870s, former Confederate general Forest of Tennessee became the head of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He enlisted the aid of Albert Pike to write the Klan initiation rites. Former general Lee of Virginia coined the phrase "invisible empire" while refusing the leadership position.

While Morals and Dogma demonstrates Mr. Pikes brilliance, and his knowledge of the African origins of masonry, the book also gives the reader insight as to how one can decode hidden messages, signs and symbols (see the DaVinci Codes, Angels and Demons, and National Treasure). Mr. Pike agrees with me,
that the first lodge of record is at SakaRa (Saqquara) and built 6000 years ago.

Albert Pike, MWGM, led a Grand Lodge, whose members were partners in the British East India Company, which was one of the largest slave trading operations in the world, whose members were active in the KKK, and whose members made up the crux of Confederate leadership. Pike's lodge members were chief suspects in the murder of President Lincoln and got away without a trial (see JFK). Last but not least, Pike says himself, in his book Morals and Dogma, "we worship Lucifer, not Adonai (El Ohim)".

I have visited the tomb of Mr. Pike, in the Lodge at 1733 16th Street, NW, Washington, D. C., where he is upright and standing on the square. The question for you is....is he really?

Stephen Durham
"The only statue in Washington, D.C. of a confederate general is the Masonic statue of Albert Pike. Pike was an attorney too. In the 1830s he travelled the southwestern US, and wrote of his experiences with the Native Americans. I try to reserve all opinions about those involved in the Civil War/War Between the States. Those were some very difficult times. I had family that fought under NB Forrest, and the oral history handed to me is assertive that no person would have wanted to live in the South during that time: white, black, red, or yellow. Those today, who would wave the Rebel flag have no idea that there was not freedom of movement in the Confederacy. Thank God the South didn't win! If Pike did plan the assassination of the President, he did the South a great disservice. The South is just now coming out of economic agrarianism due to Reconstruction. Both NB Forrest and Albert Pike were members of the Odd Fellows, a little known organization now. What is the link to Masonry by the Odd Fellows? NB Forrest was the first white politician during Reconstruction to actively court the black vote in Memphis. There are a lot of glaring contradictions in the lives of NB Forrest and Albert Pike. Forrest was cleared of all charges by a Radical Republican Congress for his alleged war crimes at Fort Pillow, TN. There's a lot more to this than meets the eye. When NB Forrest surrendered in MS, out of his 10,000 soldiers, 4,000 were black men. No doubt about it though, Africa has always been the seedbed of enlightenment. I still hope for the day when my children, boys and girls, will be judged not by the color of their skin, orby their gender, but by the content of their character."

"Reggie worked feverishly; attempting to bypass the heavily encrypted firewalls surrounding this worm, but to no avail. Never has anything been so difficult for this young man to bypass, but he continued on-exhausting every capable brain cell he had focused on this task.

An hour flew by as Reggie worked, when all of a sudden a message flashed across the screen:

* * *

EVERY HACKER IN THE WORLD; WORKING FOR THE U.S. GOVERNMENT AND BEYOND ARE ATTEMPTING TO FIND ME AND/OR UNDERSTAND HOW IS IT THAT I COULD HAVE MANAGED TO SHUT DOWN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

YOU'VE PIQUED MY INTEREST! YOUR METHODS ARE QUITE INTRIGUING! YOU'VE COME CLOSER THAN ANY AT CUTTING THROUGH MY WELL FORTIFIED FIREWALLS THAT SURROUND MY PET WORM. WHOEVER YOU ARE, KNOW THAT MY INTENTIONS ARE NOBLE-AS NOBLE AS MY LOVE OF COUNTRY.

I'M AN AMERICAN PATRIOT ON A MISSION TO AWAKEN HUMANITY TO THE CORRUPTION PLAGUING THIS WORLD AND BEYOND. I AM AN ESSENTIAL MEMBER OF AN ORGANIZATION THAT'S FUNDED BY AN ABUNDANCE OF AMERICA'S WEALTH, PRIMARILY FROM THE HIDDEN TREASURES OF THE CONFEDERACY.

THE ORGANIZATION I SPEAK OF IS A TENURED ORGANIZATION THAT COVERTLY INFILTRATED THE KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE DURING AMERICA'S CIVIL WAR. THE KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE IS AN ORGANIZATION FOUNDED BY NONE OTHER THAN THE INFAMOUS JESSE JAMES. JESSE JAMES FAKED HIS ASSASSINATION, FIRST TO CUT OFF ANY TRACE THAT WOULD POSSIBLY LEAD AUTHORITIES TO STOLEN GOODS, BUT PRIMARILY IN ORDER TO LEAD THIS ORGANIZATION, THE KNIGHTS OF THE GOLDEN CIRCLE.

HE LED THIS ORGANIZATION UNDER ASSUMED NAMES UNTIL HE DIED IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY! AS UNBELIEVABLE AS THIS MAY SOUND TO YOU, AN INTERGALACTIC WAR HAS BEEN IN PLAY BETWEEN TWELVE SPECIES OF EXTRATERRESTRIAL RACES SINCE THE BEGINNING OF OUR EXISTENCE ON THIS PLANET. MOREOVER, HUMANITY-EARTHLINGS, IF I MAY SAY-ARE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS WAR.

THE ABUNDANCE OF UFO SIGHTINGS WE ENCOUNTER DAILY ARE SIGNS OF THIS WAR. AND ITS CHAIN OF EVENTS TRAVELS A LINE ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE. THESE ARE THE REASONS OUR GOVERNMENT SPARES NO EXPENSE AND AGGRESSIVELY SEEKS TO DOUSE THE FLAMES OF UFO SIGHTINGS, ABDUCTIONS, AND ENCOUNTERS.

THIS IS A WAR MADE OBVIOUS DUE TO THE ANOMALOUS OCCURRENCES HUMANITY REFERS TO AS MYSTERIES: FROM CROP CIRCLES TO ABDUCTIONS, NOT TO MENTION THE BAFFLING OCCURRENCES STILL TAKING PLACE IN AREAS LIKE KECKSBURG, ROSWELL, GULF BREEZE, AND RENDLESHAM.

THERE WAS AN EARTHLY HABITAT FORGED OF A PEOPLE A VERY LONG TIME AGO THAT WERE HUMAN IN APPEARANCE, BUT IN FACT EXTRATERRESTRIAL. TO THIS DAY, THIS SPECIES LIVES AMONG US, BREEDING WITH HUMANITY AND CREATING OBEDIENT SEEDS-SEEDS THAT HAVE INFILTRATED EVERY FACTION OF OUR WORLD, FROM HOUSEHOLDS TO GOVERNMENTS. WHAT I'M DESCRIBING TO YOU IS AN INVASION-ONE THAT CANNOT BE STOPPED.

THIS SAME SPECIES DESTROYED THE ONCE INHABITED PLANET MARS. THIS SPECIES-A ROGUE ELEMENT AMONG ITS OWN KIND-WERE BANISHED, ACTUALLY SENT AWAY FROM ITS HOME WORLD AND FORCED TO BE THE FIRST OF THE SPECIES TO FORGE AN EARTHLY BASE: ATLANTIS. YOUR COUNTRY'S INFAMOUS MAJESTIC 12 THAT CAME TOGETHER AFTER THE ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO, UFO INCIDENT, WERE NOT HUMAN BEINGS. IN ADDITION, PROJECT BLUE BOOK WAS AN INGENIOUS SHROUD TRUMPED UP BY CERTAIN HEADS OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO CONFUSE PROMINENT UFO RESEARCHERS SO THEY WOULD SPOUT FALSE PROPAGANDA. THIS IN TURN CREATED GOVERNMENT PLANTS SENT TO SPREAD DISINFORMATION.

I'M THE ONE WHO RELEASED THE MAJESTIC 12 DOCUMENTS AND THE DOCUMENTS ARE, WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, GENUINE IN EVERY FORM AND NEED TO BE ACTED UPON EXPEDITIOUSLY. SIXTEEN MEMBERS OF THE CURRENT UNITED STATES' PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATION AND FOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ARE LITERALLY NOT OF THIS WORLD-NOT HUMAN. IN ADDITION, AMERICA IS NOT THE ONLY COUNTRY INFILTRATED; IT'S WORLDWIDE.

MANY POWERFUL AMERICANS ARE ACTUALLY IN LEAGUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR SPECIES. I'M WARNING YOU ALL THAT THIS SPECIES DOESN'T HAVE HUMANITY'S BEST INTERESTS AT HEART. HUMAN BEINGS ARE THEIR PRIMARY FOOD SOURCE AND THIS HAS BEEN TRUE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF OUR EXISTENCE HERE ON THIS PLANET. THE PLANET MARS, THOUGH BARREN, WAS ONCE AS FRUITFUL AND HABITABLE AS EARTH.

IT WAS A PLANET OUR ANCESTORS REFERRED TO AS HOME UNTIL THIS PARTICULAR EXTRATERRESTRIAL RACE INVADED IN A MASSIVE STRIKE THAT NEARLY WIPED OUR SPECIES FROM THE UNIVERSE, UNTIL THREE OTHER EXTRATERRESTRIAL SPECIES CAME TO HUMANITY'S AID. TAKING DNA FROM SURVIVORS OF THE ATTACK, THESE THREE SPECIES SEEDED OUR PLANET. IT'S AN EVEN SPLIT HOW THESE EXTRATERRESTRIAL SPECIES VIEW HUMANITY.

SOME FEEL STRONGLY THAT WE MAY BE ABLE TO OFFER THE UNIVERSE AND ITS INHIBITORS MANY THINGS, OTHERS BELIEVE WE'RE A SPECIES THAT LONGS FOR DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, GIVEN OUR WARRING NATURE. MANY BELIEVE THE HUMAN RACE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ADVANCE TO THE POINT WHERE SPACE TRAVEL BECOMES COMMONPLACE.

THE TYPE OF MASSIVE STRIKE INITIATED AGAINST MARS IS NOW MORE DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO INITIATE, DUE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED INTERGALACTIC WAR THAT'S AFOOT. BUT TRUST THAT OUR WILLINGNESS TO PARTNER WITH THIS PARTICULAR SPECIES IS NOT WISE. WHAT THEY'RE COLLECTIVELY DOING IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF OUR PLANET OR FOR HUMANITY IN GENERAL. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

* * *

"Jacks?" Reggie yelled as Agent Jacks made his way over to Reggie in a hurry. After making his way over to Reggie, Agent Jacks read the message. Within moments of completing his read another message appeared on the screen:

* * *

FOR NOW I BID YOU A FOND FAREWELL, BUT KNOW THAT THERE'S MORE GOING ON HERE THAN I'M SURE YOU KNOW. PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON IN OUR SOCIETY, FOR WITHIN LIE HIDDEN TRUTHS YOU ARE NOT MEANT TO KNOW. SOON, I WILL INFORM THE MASSES OF THESE TRUTHS AND LET THE CARDS FALL AS THEY MAY.

* * *

The screen went blank."

The Indians of Kansas.

DAILY TIMES
LEAVENWORTH, KS
May 29, 1861, p. 2, c. 1

The Indians of Kansas.

We are informed by Mr. Ross, the agent of the Pottawotomies, that they heartily sympathize with their Great Father, in his efforts to subdue his rebellious and wayward Southern children, and have formed companies to aid, if necessary, in defending Kansas from any hostile or invading force. While this is undoubtedly true of the Pottawotomies, who are comparatively intelligent, there are other tribes in the State who may not be so thoroughly devoted to the Government. The Shawnees and Osages, especially, should be closely watched. We advise the agents of those Indians to ascertain, beyond question, whether they are disposed to be friendly to the Government. It may not be long before Kansas has to cope with the treacherous slaveholding savages of the Cherokee Nation, and we should therefore be certain that we have no enemy in our own midst. "

An Extraordinary Affair—

DAILY TIMES [LEAVENWORTH, KS]
February 25, 1865, p. 2, c. 2
From the Cleveland Herald.
An Extraordinary Affair—
A Rebel Spy in Petticoats.

On Saturday two young women, apparently about nineteen or twenty years old, called at the rooms of the Soldiers' Aid Society and applied for transportation to Washington. One of them giving the name of Charlotte Anderson, said she had enlisted two or three times in the army, but had been rejected on her sex being discovered. As they turned to leave, one of the ladies in the room became suspicious that "Charlotte" was a man, and sent upstairs to the Provost Marshal, by whose order "Charlotte" and her companion were immediately arrested.
"Charlotte," on being charged with sailing under false colors, indignantly denied the imputation, and her companion, Emma, also assured the officers that "Charlotte" was a girl, for they had slept together several nights. Emma proved the honest of her belief by urging "Charlotte" to submit to the medical examination proposed, but "Charlotte" stoutly refused, and it was only by forcible means that the examination was made, and the fact established that "she" was a "he." Emma was overwhelmed with confusion and grief on the discovery of the sex of her companion, and wept bitterly, refusing all further communication with him. "Charlotte" was locked up in the city prison, and Emma was taken in charge by Commissioner Kirkpatrick.
The girl, Emma, whose other name we suppress, for the reason that she was undoubtedly innocent of any complicity in the schemes of her companion, states that she lived in Erie, but has been for some time living as a hired girl in this city. She is a good work girl, being well acquainted with the business of the kitchen, and apparently modest and well-behaved. She says that several days since she formed the acquaintance of "Charlotte Anderson," and they had been living at the City Hotel and at the Bennett House. They slept together, Emma having not the slightest suspicion that her bed-fellow was not a woman. Charlotte always put out the light before entirely undressing, alleging that it was too cold to so when undressed. "She" also either got up and dressed before Emma was awake, or lay in bed until the latter had left the room. "Charlotte" frequently received letters, many of them from Dayton. Some of these letters were addressed to "Charlie" Anderson, which, she supposed to be a diminutive of Charlotte. It was noticeable, however, that they were always delivered at the gentleman's window of the Post-office, "Charlotte" always going there for them.
A few days since "Charlotte" proposed that they should go to Washington, where she could get good places for both of them, and to this Emma agreed. Owing to the failure of her companion to receive some funds she expected, Emma spent all the money she had, and they were obliged to seek aid at the Soldiers' Aid Rooms, as narrated.
After the arrest "Charlotte" was at first sullen, but, when dressed in soldier's clothes, brightened up, and expressed a willingness to make a clean breast of it. He then made the following statement:
The State of Ohio, Cuyahoga County,
My name is Charles Anderson; was born in Hamburg, Germany; came to America about fifteen years since; my father is dead, my mother lives in Erie, Pennsylvania. I enlisted first in July, 1863, in the 39th Pennsylvania Regiment; left that regiment in July, 1864; being sent to Chattanooga by ---------, I put on woman's clothes, representing myself to Major Wells as a woman; he furnished me the clothes. I went from there to New York City; I remained in New York till October, then, went to Cincinnati; staid there till I enlisted in November, 1864, in the 60th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. I was sent to the front. I staid with the regiment till about a month ago. February 10, 1865, I was out of money and was trying to get transportation back to my regiment; I called on the Ladies' Aid Society for help, but failed; remained at the Burnet House, and this morning called on Clark Warren for transportation, where I was at the time of my arrest. I am a member of the 60th Ohio Infantry, Co. D. I adopted the course I have pursued to get home, and was intending to go back to my regiment. I came through City Point on my way home. I saw General Patrick acting Provost Marshal at City Point; I told him I was a girl; he told me to go home, and he told me he gave the Captain of the Provost Guard all necessary papers to protect me and pass me that I might go home if I would stay there. I told the Lieutenant in charge that I was coming back. I was sent to the Sanitary Commission, and the State agent furnished me transportation to Cleveland. I had a little money left; paid my way to Cincinnati and back home.
The whole of this statement is undoubtedly false. Evidence has been collected that leaves little doubt of the fact that "Charles Anderson" is a rebel spy, and in communication with persons in the North. All his letters were destroyed as received. His statement in regard to living in Erie is false, as he is entirely ignorant of localities and persons there, and he is likewise ignorant in regard to Cincinnati, where he professed to have lived. He has been in Dayton, and he returned from there lately, remarking to the girl that he was very glad for his anxiety would soon be over. In his possession were found three sets of wearing apparel, one female, one military, and one the dress of a dashing "young man about town."
Charlie, alias "Lottie" Anderson, is very feminine in appearance, and has a soft and low feminine voice, whenever he chooses to use it. When dressed as a man he has the appearance of a girl in disguise, and when dressed in tasteful feminine attire, it is exceedingly difficult to doubt the femininity. His accomplishments are varied. He is a dead shot with a pistol, a splendid horseman, can talk three languages fluently, can dance admirably, play the piano, do fine embroidery, knit and crochet equal to any woman, and can spark the boys, as many of them know to their mortification. On one occasion "she" received a stolen kiss behind the door, from an enamored young man, and returned it with fervor to his delight. Although so feminine in appearance, he is remarkably strong for his size.
There are other facts that go to show he is a rebel spy, that it would not be proper to give at this time. The object of his getting acquainted with the girl, and keeping her in ignorance of his real sex, was to divert suspicion from himself until he could get to Washington. In private with Emma he has expressed a bitter hatred to the North, and a determination to shoot President Lincoln if he could get a chance at him.

“A SECRET SOCIETY HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR”

Two new Civil War histories by a UC Civil War historian are due out soon. They bring to light a vicious border state campaign and secret societies of the time.

“A SECRET SOCIETY HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR”
University of Cincinnati Civil War historian Mark Lause has a new book out later this year, titled “A Secret Society History of the Civil War” (University of Illinois Press). It’s a look at secret societies (societies similar to the Freemasons) that were active in the years leading up to and during the Civil War. And the Cincinnati connection to at least one of these secret societies is strong.

Knights of the Golden Circle: John Wilkes Booth a member
That secret society, the Knights of the Golden Circle, was the brainchild of a Cincinnati con man named George Bickley. He fundraised for the group here in Cincinnati before the Civil War and envisioned it as a para-military organization. During the war, he offered the services of the Knights to the Confederacy, suggesting the organization could work as a fifth column among the North’s civilian population.

Explained Lause, UC professor of history, “The Confederates turned Bickley down, but the South did have a secret service that was active in the North during the war. The United States government was convinced the Knights of the Golden Circle were a big part of this Confederate secret service and spent resources tracking down the organization. However, it wasn’t the case, since the Knights and their numbers were greatly inflated by Bickley.”

While the Knights were never actually a fifth-column force in terms of numbers, they and their ideas are thought to have influenced John Wilkes Booth, the stage actor who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Said Lause, “John Wilkes Booth is thought to have been either a member or sympathizer with the Knights of the Golden Circle who were in Baltimore at that time. A man named George Sanders, who was a member of the Confederate secret service, was reputed to have been Booth’s contact via the group. And Sanders was a member of another secret society that advocated assassination.”

“In general, you can think of secret societies as umbrella organizations for those who want to break existing laws for what they believe are patriotic reasons,” said Lause. “On one side, there are groups like the Knights of the Golden Circle....."
